The weather that I spoke about in the last entry materialised almost as forecast but in our sheltered spot didn’t affect us much. We could feel some swell, see the clouds rushing past overhead and of course feel the rain hammering down in the frontal part of the system. Read more ›

Guessing at the weather

We are still sitting out a prolonged period of windy conditions that look set to last for some days to come. I thought that I would write a little about the sources of information that we use to ‘guess’ what weather we ‘might’ get. Here when we talk of weather we generally mean ‘wind’; provided that the wind is favourable what the rest of the “weather” is doing is almost irrelevant. Read more ›

One Fine Day

A fine day in Estrecho Nelson

A fine day in Estrecho Nelson

The 23rd was passed swinging at anchor in Caleta Darde. It was quite comfortable, especially for peace of mind after the wind backed to the West and I was able to veer more chain.

Under way early on the 24th saw us initially covering ground previously traversed Read more ›

Four days in a row

The jellyfish of Mostyn

The jellyfish of Mostyn

Weather bound in Caleta Mussel was what we was; until the 18th when we got under way again. Because of the tidal current in Paso Tortuoso which we were in as soon as we left the bay we had to wait until about one hour before high water before leaving. This meant that we couldn’t leave until about 14:30. Read more ›

Tacking, tacking

"Morgane" in Caleton Silva

"Morgane" in Caleton Silva

Rain, rain, go away, come again another day – goes the rhyme. The only two problems with the rain here are that it never goes away and it always comes again another day. We went for a walk in the rain at Caleta Hidden on Thursday to have a look at the channel to see if it was worth heading out and didn’t like what we saw. Read more ›

Into the Magellan Straight

The bare naked mountains of Brecknock

The bare naked mountains of Brecknock

After a couple of days in Caleta Silva the shine had worn, or washed, off the place and it was time to get moving. The morning of the 7th dawned yet wet and still windy so after a peek outside I went back to bed. By about 8 o’clock the wind had gone off and we started getting the shore lines aboard determined to make the best of what the forecast said would be a quiet day and at 9 we were under way. “Celephais” was just ahead of us barely visible through the rain Read more ›

Big grey sky

Big grey sky

On Tuesday we had a long day making about 30 miles of progress but actually covering more than 40 as I took Paula on a sightseeing trip into Seno Pia which is a spectacular set of Fjords. After that it was a pretty routine motor sail through Paso Timbales and past our last Chilean Navy reporting station, Alcarmar Timbales (Alcamar is short for ‘Alcadia del Mar’), Read more ›

Westward – along the Beagle Channel

Mount Darwin from the Beagle Channel

Mount Darwin from the Beagle Channel

We stayed in Puerto Williams for almost two weeks. In that time we made a few adjustments to the systems on the boat (this will no doubt be on-going), the Puerto Williams mechanic skimmed the commutator on the windlass motor which was a bit corroded and seemed to be causing the motor to intermittently refuse to start, and Arnaud from the yacht “Paradise” kindly took the faulty alternator to Ushuaia Read more ›

A couple of little trips

Well the rain never did let up and allow me to apply that final brushed coat of paint to the topsides that I refer to in the last blog entry!

Once the prop-shaft was back from the machinist it was simple matter to install it and hook it up to the flexible coupling on the gearbox; a final look over the hull, check the anode nuts, etc., and haul her back into her natural element.

Back into the water we go

The tender did eventually get finished and has been working well. I need to get some longer oars to make rowing easier but overall I’m very impressed, she is a very dry and stable little dinghy. Read more ›
